While we understand that at times eating and shopping for healthy alternatives can be dearer than what is available in your average supermarket, it needn\u2019t be.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we know only too well that the health costs associated with a poor diet and lifestyle is high\u2014when you consider degenerative diseases and cost of prescription medications\u2014we believe that paying a slightly higher price at the checkout justifies the expense. However we understand that for many families, cost is a real issue and puts a strain on an already strained family budget. So we recommend eating as clean as possible within your budget and this is where the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen come in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u2018dirty\u2019 and \u2018clean\u2019 list of foods are created by Environmental Working Group (EWG), a U.S. health and environmental research organisation that analyses the fruit and vegetables most commonly laden with synthetic pesticide and fertiliser residues.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2442\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/4615709577_a0e0792909_o.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2442\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2442\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/4615709577_a0e0792909_o.jpg\" alt=\"add more greens to your diet\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/4615709577_a0e0792909_o.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/4615709577_a0e0792909_o-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, after conducting research, they provide revised lists of the cleanest foods to purchase and the dirtiest foods to avoid (and purchase organic). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are saying, eat your fruits and vegetables,\u201d said Sonya Lunder, EWG\u2019s senior analyst. \u201cBut know which ones have the highest amounts of pesticides so you can opt for the organic versions, if available and affordable, or grab a snack off the Clean Fifteen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the 12 conventionally grown foods people should avoid purchasing\u2014and is highly recommended they purchase organic\u2014 are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; apples<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; strawberries<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; peaches<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; nectarines<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; grapes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; celery<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; spinach<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; capsicum<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; cucumbers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; cherry tomatoes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; snap peas (imported)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; potatoes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 15 &#8216;cleanest&#8217; pineapples<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; cabbage<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; sweet peas (frozen)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; onions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; asparagus<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; mangos<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; papayas<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; kiwi fruit<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; eggplant<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; So not only do the chemicals destroy the fertility of the soil in which food is grown, it also wreaks havoc on our natural environment and affects our wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to reducing consumption of the \u2018Dirty Dozen\u2019 other inexpensive ways to reduce pesticide exposure are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grow your own food wherever possible so that you have control over the inputs. Herbs can be easily grown in a small backyard or in pots on your balcony or kitchen. If you have a larger space, try your hand at urban gardening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swap or barter with friends and family who grow chemical-free food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go shopping at farmers markets and get to know your producers. Learn more about how and where your food is grown. If purchasing from an organic food store, ask about the suppliers, how and where the food is grown.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy organic food in bulk to save money.
