{"id":4127,"date":"2017-09-29T05:33:02","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T05:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/?p=4127"},"modified":"2017-09-29T05:33:02","modified_gmt":"2017-09-29T05:33:02","slug":"turn-lunch-box-frown-upside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/2017\/09\/29\/turn-lunch-box-frown-upside\/","title":{"rendered":"Turn that Lunch Box Frown Upside Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Therese Hodgkinson (Naturopath)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The lunch box. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It certainly can drain you of all enthusiasm for new ideas after years of packing lunches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thoughts of \u2026where do I start, what do I add, how do I keep<i> <\/i>it<i> interesting yet healthy? <\/i>As a mum who has literally packed hundreds of lunch boxes over the years (&amp; still packing) I understand, we have all been there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So let\u2019s turn that lunchbox frown upside down. Here are my tips.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1949 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/happy-child-3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/happy-child-3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/happy-child-3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/happy-child-3.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The key to a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>healthy lunch box is to provide a <strong>nutrient dense l<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>unch<\/strong> which will give<strong> long lasting energy<\/strong>. This will improve:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ability to focus on tasks for better learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> reduce mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> assist behaviour &amp; <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">improve overall health (including digestive &amp; immune health)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Make sure you include the following in each packed lunch\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Fruit &amp; Veg<\/strong> &#8211; high in antioxidants, fibre, vitamins &amp; minerals<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Protein<\/strong> &#8211; a good serve at both morning tea &amp; lunch is very important (not to mention breakfast) &#8211; think eggs, meat, poultry, fish, dairy, legumes<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Fibre<\/strong> &#8211; fruit, veg, legumes, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Healthy fats<\/strong> -olives &amp; olive oil, oily fish, avocado, coconut, seeds <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Try to broaden your children\u2019s diets by <strong>regularly introducing new nutrient rich foods<\/strong>. This will help keep it interesting while improving their health. Presenting foods in new ways can help to make them more attractive e.g. adding raspberries to their yoghurt, crazy sandwich shapes, try wraps, a new cute patterned lunch wrapper (see below). <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1672\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1672\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1672 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/saladinjar-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/saladinjar-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/saladinjar.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Serving veggies &amp; salads in a jar can be a great way to make food more interesting &amp; fun.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now for ideas\u2026.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\">Cucumber sushi with salmon &amp; avocado <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Cut cucumber into 3cm thick discs, scoop seeds from middle of ring, pack centre with salmon (tinned) mixed with avocado to create pieces of \u201csushi\u201d. Cucumber ring replaces rice. Keep cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s1\">School friendly trail mix (Nut Free)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">Pepitas, sunflower seeds, yoghurt buttons, coconut chips &amp; dried apricots (chopped).
