habit they have come to see me about, for instance smoking, overeating, drinking excessively, feeling anxious, fear of public speaking to name just a few, are depriving them of enjoyment in life.\u00a0 They also know there is something else they would prefer to be experiencing and yet struggle to make this change.<\/p>\n<p>Very often part of the cause of this frustration between what a person is currently experiencing and what they would prefer to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/2020\/09\/24\/power-beliefs-katina-gleeson\/am-i-good-enough\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5826\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5826 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/am-i-good-enough-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/am-i-good-enough-.jpg 2592w, http:\/\/www.vivehealth.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/am-i-good-enough--685x1024.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a>experiencing is unhelpful beliefs.\u00a0 We can call these beliefs many things such as erroneous, limiting, false or destructive.\u00a0 Many of these beliefs start with \u201c<em>I can\u2019t<\/em> \u2026\u201d or <em>\u201cI am \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each of us has core beliefs and to a great extent they define us.\u00a0 They influence who we think we are and what we believe we are capable and not capable of doing.\u00a0 These beliefs may be helpful and support us to achieve what we want to achieve, for instance a belief that \u201cI\u2019m good enough\u201d, \u201cpeople respect me\u201d, \u201cI can trust myself\u201d.\u00a0 Or beliefs may hold us back, for instance \u201cI\u2019m not good enough\u201d, \u201cI can\u2019t stop \u2026\u201d, \u201cI don\u2019t have motivation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the limiting beliefs are learnt in childhood and are held at the unconscious level.\u00a0 Like all beliefs whether limiting or helpful, they influence us very powerfully in relation to how we feel, what we do and the decisions we make.<\/p>\n<p>A widely practiced form of therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, uses the conscious mind to replace limiting beliefs with helpful beliefs.\u00a0 The focus being on training the conscious mind to learn the right way to think and\/or feel and\/or behave.\u00a0 A person might identify that they have the limiting belief \u201cI\u2019m not good enough\u201d and they will be asked to challenge and replace that belief with a helpful belief\u00a0 such as \u201cI am good enough\u201d whenever they are aware of the limiting belief influencing them in some way.\u00a0 I have found this approach unnecessarily difficult and prolonged having the responsibility for change on the quite limited conscious mind.<\/p>\n<p>As a hypnotherapist I believe a much more effective approach to changing our limiting beliefs is using the unconscious mind.\u00a0 Our beliefs play out at an unconscious level and the most effective way for changing
