Lomi Lomi Massage – the gift of Aloha love!

Aloha All!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I thought it would be timely to speak about love and in particular the Hawaiian concept of Aloha. The word Aloha is more than just a simple greeting. It literally means “the breath of life.” But more than that, for the Hawaiians, Aloha is a way of living and loving that honours and respects both self and others. The deeper meaning of Aloha starts by teaching ourselves to love our own beings first and afterwards to spread the love to others.

What makes Lomi Lomi different from other forms of massage is the mindset behind the massage, namely the spirit of Aloha.  When receiving a Lomi Lomi the spirit of Aloha flows through the giver and the receiver. The Lomi Lomi practitioner becomes the vessel, and allows the unconditional love to pour through them into the body on the table. Lomi Lomi is so heart based; working with the spirit of Aloha and the power of touch it facilitates deep healings on all levels.

Live and Love Aloha

Kahuna, Sherman Dudoit who passed the lineage of the Traditional Old Style Lomi Lomi on to my kahu (teacher) Dawn Charlton, describes this nurturing and loving form of massage perfectly…

“One of the most essential imperatives of this tradition is that Lomi Lomi was a modality of pure love. The work must come from the heart and through the hands resulting in healing and bonding at a level beyond comprehension by the mind; it is a movement of pure love and grace, even to observe a “treatment” is to receive it…. This is the way of traditional Lomi Lomi in the old style.”

How much can you get from an empty cup? Not a lot

When did you last give yourself permission to be still, relax and just be? As things become hectic, looking after ourselves often goes by the wayside, however as life becomes hectic it is even more important to take the time to fill your cup and nurture your relationship with yourself as only then can we truly nurture our relationships with others. Loving one’s self is the first step to healing ourselves and others. No matter how busy our lives are we should take time out for periodic healing sessions whether these be massages or other modalities.
