Did you know that different probiotic species have different actions? Increasingly evidence is emerging implicating specific probiotic species and strains in the treatment of various ailments.
It can be challenging at times to navigate the vast array of available probiotics. Of course it is always best to consult a naturopath or nutritionist, but here is a quick overview of which probiotic may be right for you from an evidence-based perspective.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
There is evidence to suggest that the species found in Orthoplex Multiflora, including Lactobacillus casei, L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. delbrueckii spp bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium longum, B. breve, B. infantis and Streptococcus thermophiles, may improve symptoms and clinical markers in NAFLD.
Obesity
Bioceuticals Ultrabiotic-45 comprises L. rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, L. acidophilus, B. longum, B. breve and S. thermophiles which may positively influence total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in obese individuals. Interestingly L. gasseri found in Wagner Probiotica may improve body weight and abdominal visceral fat.
IBS
L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, B. animalis spp. lactis, B. bifidum, B. breve and S. thermophiles found in Medlab Multibiotic may attenuate symptoms of bloating, pain and altered bowel motions in individuals with IBS. Asthma / Eczema
