KFibre | A Clinical Review

At Vive we are quickly becoming impressed by the results achieved with Kfibre. In this blog we will discuss how this Australian grown and made source of dietary fiber is producing such incredible results with a number of common health concerns including constipation, bloating, acid reflux, weight management and blood sugar control. This prebiotic fibre really packs a punch!

What is KFibre?

Kfibre is a high nutrient fibre supplement made from 100% Australian sugar cane (aka sugar cane fibre). Don’t be alarmed by it being made from 100% sugar cane however, only 5% of the sugar remains after it has been processed, which is a chemical free process using only water. The composition of Kfibre is 87% fibre & 13% natural waxes, minerals, vitamins, plant sterols & antioxidants.  Kfibre is designed to be supportive for digestion & microbiome health, immune health, metabolism & weight management. Kfibre is also rich in chromium, silicon, selenium and other trace minerals (2).

The benefits of KFibre include:

Improved microbiome health

Due to Kfibre’s broad spectrum prebiotic activity it supports the flourishing of many important commensal bacteria and supports many aspects of our health including optimising the function the both digestive and immune systems. One of the critical ways this is achieved is via the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs are produced when dietary fibre is fermented in the colon by the gut bacteria and plays an integral role in the health of our digestive tract and overall health. One SCFA in particular, butyric acid, plays an important role in promoting bowel motility, supporting gut lining integrity & immunity (1). Kfibre produces high levels of butyric acid, when compared to other prebiotic containing grains such as barley, rye and wheat.

Support digestion & bowel function

Word on the street is that if you looking for perfect numbers 2’s, then Kfibre is your go to. We can speak from experience on this. Numerous customers (& staff) reports have detailed exactly this! Sufficient dietary fibre, from both soluble & insoluble sources, in the daily diet is essential for good digestive health (read more about the importance of dietary fibre here). Kfibre contains both soluble and insoluble fibre which feeds your good gut bugs, protected the gut lining and promotes the movement of fecal matter through the bowel.

Sugar cane fibre has also shown positive results in relieving the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder (GORD). A pilot study to be published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology showed great results for relieving symptoms of GORD, reducing both the acid reflux and regurgitation symptoms (3).

Weight management & blood glucose control

It’s become clear that the microbiome plays an important role in weight management, blood glucose control and appetite satiety. The research indicates that a number of bacteria are responsible for these actions. To achieve & sustain weight loss, supporting the microbiome makes perfect sense (4).  Kfibre may promote healthy weight management (& loss) by also supporting healthy blood glucose control and appetite satiety.

One trial comparing the use of Kfibre (in conjunction with a health eating program) against placebo found an increase of up 76% weight loss in the Kfibre group over an 8-week period in women & 56% in men (5). Not bad for a prebiotic fibre supplement!

Kfibre may also assist with blood glucose regulation & metabolism. Research by Southern Cross University confirmed that Kfibre contains a carbohydrate metabolising & glycaemic load lowering flavonoid tricin. Tricin may have a positive effect on post prandial (post meal) blood sugar levels.

FODMAP Friendly

Our FODMAP friends usually find it very difficult to find a good prebiotic fibre that supports their digestive system and provides substantial relief from digestive upset such as bloating and irregular bowel habits (i.e. constipation, diarrhoea or both). Kfibre is an excellent and safe option for individuals following a FODMAP diet. Kfibre has also be shown to improve the symptoms associated with food intolerance and sensitivities (8).

Cholesterol Management

Kfibre contains policosanols, a well-known & researched cholesterol lowering ingredient. Policosanols have been shown to have a positive effect cholesterol by increasing HDL (good) cholesterol & reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol (6, 7). Research is still underway to determine the overall efficacy of Kfibre in this particular area.

Alongside green banana resistant starch and partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG), Kfibre is quickly becoming a very important ingredient in the formula’s we are recommending to our clients. The results really do speak for themselves. If you would like more information or would like to try Kfibre for yourself please feel free to pop into see us at Vive.
